What This Election Tells Us About What A “REAL AMERICAN” Is- Part II: If You Watch This Video You’ll Understand My Frustration

Not too long ago, I wrote a post titled “What Does This Election Tell Us About What A “Real American” Is?” You can click on the link to read it, but in a nutshell I asked the readers to ponder the question of what a “Real American” is. What do they look like? Where do they live? What religion do they belong to? I want you to watch the video below and tell me if this is who we consider to be “Real Americans”. I want you to answer those questions above and the other questions I posed in the article and create a composite profile of a “Real American”…

Now, let me state for the record that I am African American… NO Black (I think Black connotes as sense of strength that is lacking in the term African American). As a black person watching that video, I began to become frustrated for a number of reasons. First of all, I thought to myself “Wow! This is who they’re talking about when they say that Barack Obama can’t ‘close the deal’ with ‘hardworking’ Americans?” And then I became even more frustrated when I realized that these folks have the power to determine the fate of the United States of America; whether or not we “bomb, bomb, bomb- bomb, bomb Iran”, whether we join the rest of the industrialized nations in ensuring that everyone of our citizens has access to health care, or how we restore our moral standing in a world that is becoming increasingly smarter as we become increasingly dumber.

But you know what really began to aggravate me? It was the notion that it was only 43 years ago that blacks had to pass literacy tests in order to vote. Now I’m not going say that the people in that video can’t read, after all they we’re able to make those “Obama Sucks” signs. But when I took a look at what part B and C of the literacy test looked like, that did it. I’m confident that none of the people in this video would’ve been allowed to vote based on this test. Just click on the image and see for yourself:

Listen, I really didn’t want to get into the race issues in any overt discussion, but it was inevitable. These are the same people who call Barack Obama elite because he has a Columbia and Harvard education. Perhaps I’m just angry, but in all likelihood they are of the same ilk that took pride in calling Dr. Martin Luther King “boy” and reminding him that regrless of how educated and articulated he was, he was still a… well, you know.

The thing that is just glaring to me is that in the video it is clear that these folks are so blinded by their “antipathy to people who aren’t like them” that they will convince themselves that they know Sarah Palin, who NOBODY knew a month ago to Obama, who’s been in the public eye since 2004 and media saturated for the last two year. They have convinced themselves that Sarah Palin, who’s refused to do anymore interviews, except for Sean Hannity, has done more interviews than Barack Obama who has done countless. They are so logically crippled by their xenophobia that they have convinced themselves that they are Sarah Palin and Sarah Palin is them. It’s true. In their eyes they all eat mooseburgers. They all hunt wolves from helicopters, they all ride snow mobiles. They all have five children, a handicapped child and pregnant teen. By that same token, they have all convinced themselves that Sarah Palin is a single mother; that she grew up in a trailer park, that isn’t college educated (although I can’t blame them for that, after her interviews), that she’s divorced and receiving child support each month, that she makes $40,000 year instead of $120,000 as mayor plus and more that isn’t being reported by her husband, and finally that she isn’t work close to 1.3 million dollars.

You know, the question that is facing the people in this video is really simple: Do I go with the smarter more qualified person who doesn’t look I want my president to look or for the unqualified “Real American” person who validates my self-image. The problem here is that this isn’t a question that the people in this video are wrestling with ,or struggling with. For them the answer is as simple as “what’s 2 +2?”… wait bad example… the answer is as simple as “what color is a hunting vest?”.

Now, of course, any right winger reading this will bring up the fact that Obama has secured 96% of the black vote, but they’ll negate the fact that he started out with less than 30% when the primary began. They’ll leave out the evidence of how well he grasps the issues of today. They’ll forget that he was criticized by prominent black leaders and intellectuals like, Eric Dyson, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Cornell West, Tavis Smiley and Bill Clinton (jokie-joke). Believe it or not black folk are discriminant and skeptical by nature or nurture, rather. If we were like the folks in this video then Al Sharpton would probably be in Congress right now.
